Lá iontach ag cluichí ceannais an chontae! A Great day out at the County Finals!

Tuesday was All-County finals day for Antrim GAA Primary schools. The finals were held in the Antrim Forum. A remarkable day which brings together each year, the cream of Antrim primary schools GAA in Camogie, Hurling and Girls and Boys Gaelic Football. It was even more remarkable in that out of the four final blitzes at the Antrim Forum, Bunscoil Phobal Feirste were involved in 3 of the 4 finals! The Camogie, Hurling and Boys Football. A brilliant achievement in itself! First up were the schools Camógs and despite a good start defeating Gaelscoil na bhFál, the girls were knocked out by eventual champions Ballycastle. A great effort by the girls and a brilliant Ballycastle team deservedly lifted the cup. Next up were the hurlers who won the Belfast championship a few weeks ago. The boys flew out of the blocks defeating Holy Child and Glenravel, which set up a mouth-watering final against Ballycastle. A titanic tussle ensued and Ballycastle emerged victors once again breaking the hearts of our Hurlers but what a game! The boys were given no time to wallow in pity as they had to immediately put the Hurls down and take to the football field where they were drawn against fresh opposition in the south west champions, St Josephs Crumlin and Raffo champions St John the Baptist. Victory over St Josephs by both teams meant that Bunscoil Phobal Feirste and St John the Baptist would contest the All county final. Both teams faced off in the Belfast final and the Bunscoil came out with a narrow one goal win. The All-County final was to prove the same! We started the better, going a goal up inside 2 minutes, however a great counter attack drew St John the Baptist level before half-time. Coach Gearóid re-organised the team at half time and we once again took the lead with 5 minutes left to play, however a defensive lapse gifted St John the Baptist an equaliser with only 30 seconds of normal time remaining! Where most teams would drop their heads, Bunscoil Phobal Feirste raised their game and went in search of a late late winner. Some great interplay between Pádraig Ó Muirigh and Shéa Burns saw Bunscoil break through a resolute St John the Baptist defensive set-up and a final overlap opened up a small corridor of space for a shot from Sheá Burns which he duly dispatched into the bottom corner with the last attack of the game to spark wild scenes of celebration for Bunscoil Phobal Feirste who once again completed a remarkable double by retaining the All-County title they won last year. Maith sibh a pháistí!!
