Returning to School

A Thuismitheoir/Chaomhnóir a chara,

Tá súil agam go bhfuil gach rud go maith libh i láthair na huaire agus go bhfuil sibh slán sábáilte. Ba mhaith liom arís, buíochas ó chroí a ghabháil libh as ucht bhur gcuid tacaíochta le linn tréimhse a bhí iontach dúshlánach againn.

It has been a challenging few months since the children were in school and a difficult time for us all as we have had to adapt to the ‘new normal’. I again, want to thank you all sincerely for your continued support and efforts in supporting us with regards to ‘Home Learning’. Your efforts have been a great source of strength to us. I also need to thank all our teachers who have supported and provided work and guidance for yourselves and the children in these unprecedented times. We are blessed to have such a dedicated and committed staff.

As mentioned, the Department of Education has developed an Education Restart Programme which has put in place detailed measures and guidance to enable a safe, phased reopening of schools.

Our pupils’ safety is paramount and when we return to school we will adhere to the following Public Health guidance.

    • Pupils who present with symptoms must remain at home and adhere to the Government’s ‘Stay at Home’ guidance.
    • Pupils will wash/sanitise their hands more often than usual using sanitising stations in every class.
    • Pupils will be encouraged to avoid touching their mouth, eyes and nose.
    • Surfaces that are touched frequently will be regularly cleaned.
    • Measures will be in place to minimise contact and mixing.
  • Social distancing guidance will remain in effect - if still in place
  • There will be restrictions on what items pupils can bring into school i.e. no schoolbags or reusable lunch boxes may be brought into school – further guidance will be issued.
    • Uniforms will be worn - school uniform and PE gear may be alternated.
    • Parents/Carers will not be able to access the school building.
    • PPE will be available for staff use as and when required.
  • Non-contact forehead thermometers will be used to monitor temperatures – possibly upon entry to school but definitely when a child becomes ill in school.
  • New child-friendly signage will be displayed throughout the school.

We await further guidance regarding the provision of school meals. Breakfast Club and After schools will not be available initially.

Operational Guidelines will not be released to schools by Government until mid to late July. This makes planning for the new term extremely difficult.

School in the new academic term will almost certainly be different. Our wish is that all our pupils return to full-time education as soon as it is safe to do so. If the levels of infection continue to fall and social distancing rules are removed, we may find ourselves in a position to welcome all children back into school to full-time education. However, if this is not the case, it is likely to incorporate a new ‘blended’ approach to education where our pupils will be educated through a mixture of remote learning and face-to-face teaching in school. Therefore, not all pupils will attend school every day and may only attend school on a timetabled basis.

This is not what we want for our pupils or parents but you can be reassured that we, as a staff, will do our utmost to ensure these changes are achieved with your child’s wellbeing at the core of all our decisions. We will do our best to minimise the impact on families as best we can by endeavouring to accommodate siblings at the same time in school.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a healthy and happy summer break and I look forward to welcoming you all back in the new academic year. Go dtí go dtagann an lá sin bígí sábháilte a chairde agus bíodh scíste ceart samhraidh agaibh.

Séamus Ó Tuama.
